A Diabetes Diet is simply a healthy diet. As simple as it sounds, making yourself EAT a diabetes diet may be difficult.
How did you feel when your doctor first told you that you had diabetes?
Were your first thoughts “oh no!” now I can’t eat any more cake or cookies or heaven forbid, enjoy my favorite Latte!
Or, maybe you were relieved, because now you knew what was making you feel so bad. And, then that sinking feeling set in about eating “fun” food was now forbidden.
There is good news, and maybe bad news for some of you, regarding the new “Diabetes Diet” you should follow …
Diabetes Diet doesn’t have to be tasteless bland food — that’s the good news.
Diabetes Diet does have some restrictions — that’s the “bad” news. Yet, these are restrictions everyone should follow whether they have diabetes or not!
As stated before, a diabetes diet is one that is a healthy diet. If you choose healthy foods like lean meats, whole grains, low fat dairy, fresh fruit and vegetables then half your battle is won. If you eat these healthy foods on a VERY regular schedule, in the right portions, on a daily basis, then you’re on your way to feeling a lot better physically.
Now, with all of the above being stated, changing to a diabetes diet way of eating is not that easy if you have NOT been eating in a healthy way. And, let’s face it — if you were eating as described above, you probably would not have developed diabetes (or succumbed to the symptoms).
There are dozen’s of “special diabetic diet food plans” that you can use that could help you initiate your first steps to healthy eating.
Sometimes a great big JUMP into something completely different helps people discipline themselves into a new way eating. If you think this may be the right way for you to change your eating habits, then I suggest you check out the Medifast diet specifically for diabetics.

This looks like an excellent plan to kickstart weight loss. I’m always having trouble with my portion control, so something that comes pre-portioned would be great for me. One diet that I’ve had great results with so far is the APO E Gene diet developed by Pamela McDonald. She’s created a unique approach to eating right that’s based on individual gene types instead of trying to fit everyone into the same one-size-fits-all diet.

Despite what you may have heard, there is no diabetic diet, and that’s good news! The foods recommended for a diabetic diet to control blood sugar are good for those with diabetes and everyone else. This means that you and your family can eat the same healthy foods at the same time. However, for people with diabetes, the total amounts of carbohydrates consumed each day must be monitored carefully. Of the different components of nutrition, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, carbohydrates have the greatest influence on blood sugar levels. Most people with diabetes also have to monitor total fat consumption and protein intake also.
To keep your blood sugar levels correct, you need to make healthy food choices, exercise regularly, and take the medicines your doctor prescribes.
